Cape Town was the World Design Capital in 2014, and just this year alone has been awarded the Telegraph Travel Awards “Best City in the World” for the fourth year, the Condé Nast readers choice award in the World’s Best Food Cities list, and the number one place in the category Top Cities in Africa and the Middle East in the Travel & Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards. So you’ll probably want to book a few extra days after Media Party Africa.
There are a myriad things to do and see in greater Cape Town, and for some options see here http://goto.capetown/home. But if you’re going to hang around the inner city with us, the bars and restaurants below is where we’ll be. There are dozens of really good restaurants and bars, so think of this as a tasting menu.
Crayfish rolls, prawn steamed buns, pink flamingos, tiny premises, spontaneously dancing staff.
Macaroni cheese, sriracha and kimchi hot dogs, bite-sized burgers, comfortably cool, amusingly slowed down
CARNE (KEEROM ST)
Spider steaks, alarming t-bones, Karoo lamb, good wine, brick and steel ambience.
A handful of dishes done brilliantly, noveau-decrepid decor, hipsters oozing out of the walls, big bowls of ramen.
Dim sum, communal tables, transcendent pork, friendly chef, bright colours.
THE GIN BAR
Really amazing concoctions with local gins, beautiful premises in an ex-undertakers, faux-secret in that it doesn’t have any signage, and you have to walk through Honest chocolate shop to get there.
UP YOURSAbove Yours Truly in Kloof St (itself home to host of good eating places and bars), rooftop bar, Interesting people with the irritating dialled down, and really good DJs.
HOUSE OF MACHINES
Good house brand bourbon, loud and live local bands, one of the few CT bars that spills into the street, and a motorbike repair shop.
PUBLIK WINE BAR
Interesting, quirky wines from relatively unknown labels, enormously knowledgeable and friendly owner, bowls of biltong, and it’s on same premises as the acclaimed Ash restaurant.
THE POWER AND THE GLORY
Sloping slightly down the mountain, drinks are cold, awash in startup cool, ground zero for CT hipsterdom.
